Disinfecting Shared Workstations Without Damaging Electronics
In today's collaborative offices and hot-desking environments, shared workstations are a common feature. While they promote flexibility, they also become high-touch surfaces that can harbor germs. Maintaining a rigorous disinfection routine is essential for employee health, but a standard approach can easily damage sensitive and expensive electronics. The key is understanding both the enemy—germs—and the ally—your delicate equipment.
The golden rule is to never spray any liquid cleaner directly onto a device. Moisture can seep into seams, ports, and keyboards, leading to short circuits, corrosion, and permanent failure. Instead, always apply disinfectant to a microfiber cloth first, then gently wipe the surface. This method gives you control over the amount of moisture used.
Your choice of cleaning agent is critical. Avoid harsh chemicals at all costs. Abrasive cleaners, bleach, ammonia-based products (like common glass cleaners), and solvents can strip anti-glare coatings from monitors, degrade plastic surfaces, and cause yellowing or cracking. Instead, opt for solutions with at least 70% isopropyl alcohol or disinfectant wipes that are specifically labeled as safe for electronics. These solutions are effective against many pathogens and evaporate quickly, minimizing moisture risk.
Pay special attention to different components:
Keyboards & Mice: Unplug them or turn them off. Tilt the keyboard upside down and gently shake to dislodge crumbs. Use a can of compressed air to blow out debris from between keys. Then, lightly dampen a cloth with an alcohol-based solution and wipe down the keys and housing. For mice, wipe the entire surface, including the scroll wheel.
Screens & Monitors: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust. For smudges, lightly dampen a separate microfiber cloth with water or a screen-safe solution. Wipe the screen gently in one direction; never scrub in circles.
Phones & Headsets: These are high-contact devices. Use disinfectant wipes approved for electronics, paying close attention to the mouthpiece and earpieces. Ensure no moisture enters any openings.
Finally, establish a clear protocol. Provide shared workstations with the proper supplies: microfiber cloths and electronics-safe disinfectant sprays or wipes. Encourage employees to clean the station before and after use. This shared responsibility ensures consistent protection for both your team's health and your company's valuable tech assets.
